Origin: South America. Native to the upper Orinoco River basin in eastern Colombia and western Venezuela, with most records from the Rio Apure watershed; found in quiet lagoons and sluggish streams over soft substrate among leaf litter and vegetation.
Diet: Omnivorous; a small foraging omnivore with a tiny mouth that sifts sand and takes sinking dried foods plus small live or frozen fare such as bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp
Adult Size: 1-1.4 inches
Temperament: Peaceful; best kept in groups of 6+, with larger groups (8-10+) showing more natural, confident behavior
Tank Size: 15+ gallons
Tank Requirements: 72-79°F, pH 6.0-8.0, soft sand or fine smooth substrate (they are dedicated sand-sifters), planted cover, and gentle filtration
Compatible Tankmates: Small, peaceful species such as chili rasboras, small tetras, otocinclus, dwarf shrimp, and snails; avoid anything large enough to swallow or bully them

Quarantine: All of our fish are quarantined for a minimum of 2 weeks with ParaCleanse before being listed and shipped. We still recommend quarantining them yourself in a separate tank upon arrival, especially before adding them to a community tank.
