Zebra Otocinclus
Meet the Zebra Otocinclus (Otocinclus cocama), a small freshwater suckermouth catfish native to Peru. Its distinctive dark vertical markings make it a striking grazer for a peaceful, established planted aquarium. This is a specialist fish with ongoing feeding needs, not a maintenance-free solution to algae.
Adult size and care
Adults reach approximately 1.7–1.8 inches (4.4–4.5 cm) in standard length, measured without the tail fin. Aim for stable water at 70–77°F (21–25°C), pH 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water around 2–10 dGH. Provide gentle filtration, good oxygenation, plants, wood, smooth rocks, and sheltered resting areas.
A mature aquarium is essential
Add Zebra Otocinclus only to a fully cycled, well-established aquarium with abundant biofilm and soft algae on plants and other surfaces. A newly cycled or freshly scrubbed tank may not provide enough food. Preserve grazing surfaces and maintain consistently clean, stable water.
Diet and feeding
Natural biofilm, soft green algae, and diatoms are important grazing foods. Supplement with algae- or spirulina-based sinking foods and small portions of blanched zucchini or spinach. Newly introduced fish may not immediately recognize prepared foods, so do not rely on wafers alone. Check that every fish is feeding and maintaining a gently rounded belly, and remove uneaten food before it affects water quality.
Group size
Keep a group of at least six Zebra Otocinclus, with enough space and mature grazing surfaces to support the entire group. These social, timid fish are more comfortable with their own kind. Plan for their food supply as carefully as their swimming space.
Compatible tankmates
Choose small, calm companions with compatible water requirements, such as peaceful small tetras, smaller peaceful catfish, and dwarf freshwater shrimp. A quiet species-focused setup is also a good option. Avoid large, aggressive, or boisterous fish that may intimidate them, compete heavily for food, or view them as prey.
